Dear Republican Party

Dear Republican Party,

You sold your soul.

You used to stand for patriotism, but you sold your soul to a man who incited his followers into domestic terrorism in an attempt to destroy our democracy.

You used to stand for hard-working Americans, but you sold your soul to a man to a whose private businesses have made a fortune in cheating the little guy.

You used to stand for the American Dream, but you sold your soul to a man who wanted to offer that to only the people he considered “acceptable”  ( code for “Caucasian” countries ).   No opportunities for those who might come here from “shithole” nations or those who send “rapists”, etc.  ( code for non-Caucasian countries ).

You sold your soul to Donald J. Trump : a man who built his presidency on intimidation, lies and hate.  There were people who warned us, over and over, that electing Donald Trump would be bad for our nation.  There were people who predicted this inevitable result.  And not all of these naysayers were from the Democratic Party.  Some of these people were Republicans!!!

Texas Senator Ted Cruz : “He doesn’t know the difference between truth and lies.  He lies; practically every word that comes out of his mouth.”   [ May 3, 2016 ]

South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley :  “During anxious times, it can be tempting to follow the siren call of the angriest voices.”   [ January 12, 2016 ]

“I will not stop until we fight a man that chooses not to disavow the KKK.   That is not a part of our party.  That’s not who we want as President.  We will not allow that in our country.”  [ February 29, 2016 ]

“That is not who our Republican Party is.  That’s not who America is.”   [ February 29, 2016 ]

Utah Congressman Jason Chaffetz  :  “I’m out.  I can no longer endorse Donald Trump for president.”   [ October 7, 2016 ]

Texas Governor Rick Perry  :  “Donald Trump’s candidacy is a cancer on conservatism, and it must be clearly diagnosed, excised, and discarded.”    [ July 22, 2015 ]

Kentucky Senator Rand Paul : “I’m thinking, how did we get the race for the most important office in the free world to sink to such depths.  And how could anyone in my party think that this clown is fit to be President.”  [ September 28, 2015 ]

“If no one stands up to a bully, a bully will just keep doing what they’re doing.”   [ August 10, 2015 ]

Kayleigh McEnany :  “To me, a racist statement is a racist statement. I don’t like what Donald Trump said.  Donald Trump has shown himself to be a “showman”.  I don’t think that he’s a serious candidate.”   [ June 29, 2015 ]

Utah Senator Mike Lee :  “You, Sir, are the distraction.  Your conduct, Sir, is the distraction.  Mr. Trump, I respectfully ask you, with all due respect, to step aside.  Step down.  Allow someone else to carry the banner of these principles.”    [ October 7, 2016 ]

South Carolina Senator Linsey Graham  :  “I just really believe that the Republican Party has been conned here, and this guy is not a reliable, conservative Republican.”   [ May 6, 2016 ]

“This is a defining moment for the Republican Party.”  [ July 12, 2015 ]

“He’s a race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot!  Do you know how to make America great again?  Tell Donald Trump to go to hell !!!”    [ December 8, 2015 ]

All of these, and more, Republicans later vigorously supported or worked for the Trump administration.  They predicted the kind of president he was going to be, then betrayed their own truths and became some of his staunchest allies.  They sold their souls to the Devil, and now the day of reckoning has come.

Florida Senator Marco Rubio was one who was quite vocal in his opposition to Trump running for office.  Yet, he also decided later to “drink the Kool-Ade” as well.  His statements before the 2016 election were frighteningly insightful and we have seen his predictions come to fruition :

“We are on the verge of someone taking over the conservative movement and the Republican Party who’s a con-artist.”       [ February 26, 3016 ]

“There’s only one presidential candidate who has violence at his events.”     [ March 11, 2016 ]

“Leadership is not about going to an angry and frustrated people and saying ‘You should be angry and more frustrated.’  That’s not leadership.  You know what that is?  That’s called demagoguery.”  [ March 14, 2016 ]

{ demagoguery : political activity or practices that seek support by appealing to the desires and prejudices of ordinary people rather than by using rational argument }

“These are people that – whether it’s now or five years from now or two years from now or six months from now – are going to be explaining for a long time how they fell into this.   If we’re going to be the party of fear, we’re going to spend some time in the wilderness.   If we’re the party of fear, with a candidate who basically is trying to prey upon people’s fears to get them to vote for them, I think we’re going to pay a big price in November and beyond.   I don’t know how this is all going to end.  This is uncharted territory.”     [ March 15, 2016 ]

Only one Republican has consistently stood up against Trump before and after the election –  Utah Senator Mitt Romney.  And we have definitely seen his assessment of Donald Trump play out :

“He has neither the temperament or the judgement to be president, and his personal qualities would mean that America would cease to be a shining city up on a hill.”   [ March 3, 2016 ]

Our nation has become an embarrassment to ourselves and to the world.  We allowed one man to spearhead our descent into domestic white extremism.  Legitimate conservative Republicans let Trump shanghai the party and turn it into a cult that basically holds everything he says and does as sacred.  Because the legitimate and previously well respected media called him out on the things he said and did, Trump vilified them as “fake news” and you believed it.   In this day and age, there is audio and video recordings of practically everything he said and did, and in spite of the actual evidence, the truth, you refused to believe it, excused it, or attempted to explain it away.   You have decided to create or follow conspiracy theories when the truth was presented to you if it didn’t fit the narrative your cult leader had decided to adopt.  You lost your humanity.

After all that has happened in the last four years, Trump still holds the Republican Party with an iron grip.  Ten Republican Congressmen and Congresswomen voted to impeach Trump an historic second time, but 197 others of your party felt comfortable in allowing him to go without accountability for his actions.  As of January 17th, an NBC News poll shows that 43% of registered voters, primarily Republicans, still approve of his job performance.  And despite all the evidence presented that proved this was a fair election, 74% of Republicans still contend that the election was not legitimately won by Joe Biden.

We are polarized like we’ve not seen since the Civil War.  For once, I have to point out, some whites are becoming concerned about white extremism, something that every Black person has been in fear of all of our lives!  The average white person has not experienced this….until now.   I’ve always said, if it doesn’t affect you, it has no effect on you.  The average white person has never come in contact with such overt hatred and violence.  Now you have a taste of what it’s like.  We Blacks have felt and experienced the terror of white supremacy since this nation began.  Every police officer and every member Congress felt that terror of a lynch mob on January 6th.   Blacks have protested, marched, and some individuals have even rioted in some cases, in order to bring attention to the inequality of the races.   The actions of this day, January 6, 2021, was an insurrection – a violent uprising, an assault against the United States government !!!   It was treason!!!    There can be no real comparison to the protests of BLM or any other group as such.

Yesterday, Joseph R. Biden, Jr. was be sworn in as our 46th President.  He replaced the man you selected, supported, conspired with and enabled to practically destroy our democracy.  So, Dear Republican Party, where do you go from here?  Do you continue to align yourself with this lying, ignorant, immoral, racist, egotistical megalomaniac ?   Or do you return to reclaim the values your party once held in high regard – honesty, lawfulness, decency, morality……REALITY !!!
